Coil Plan
Type of Coil
There are actually many different types of Tesla Coils including spark gap, vacuum tube, solid state, dual resonant and bipolar. After much thinking, the best most cost effective route would be to make whats known as a DC resonant charging Tesla Coil. It is a lot more complicated then a normal Tesla Coil and will require more parts but it is much more controllable and can create bigger arcs. I have also decided to go all out on this project and make it a Bipolar Tesla coil. Instead of having a single tower arcing to ground, there will be two primary s, secondary's and 2 top loads. Both towers will be connected to the same tank circuit and will be wired in such a way that they are out of phase doubling the potential difference. This should make the 2 towers arc to each other and hopefully create arcs double the length.
This coil is going to be very advanced and high tech. Instead of having a simple on off switch, there will be an entire control board. All power cables will travel through this control board before traveling over to the control cabinet. The control cabinet will house the power supply, DC charging aspects of the coil and the tank circuit. (Due to dangerous its best to keep everything contained inside a box and away from the controls, that is why I have done this). Finally, the last cables will run from the control cabinet to the 2 stands where the 2 towers will be.
Wood Work
We will be making these cabinets and stands completely from scratch and so I will need do do a lot of wood work. This is where my friend comes in, he is more of the mechanical engineer and I am more of an electrical engineer and so he will be in charge of all of the wood work. As the wood work is simple to design and can be easily made, this part of the coil is already under construction.
In the next post I will show you pictures of the wood work so far.
